History of The Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes area is a history rich region in New York State. Two million years ago the lakes, originally part of a river system, were created by glacial carving in a time period known as the Ice Age. The name “Finger Lakes”, is said to be from the shape of the lakes- there are 5 lakes that formed next to each other in varying size. However, as with much of upstate New York, there is a Native American belief that the lakes are fingerprints of the Great Spirit. The area surrounding the lakes, known for it’s beautiful waterfalls and foliage, is part of the five nations, also referred to as the Haudenosaunee (Ho-den-o-SAW-nee), made up of Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga and Seneca Nations. Seneca and Cayuga Lake were named after their corresponding tribes with Mohawk, Oneida and Onondaga in the surrounding areas.
